It was a place where, no matter your race, color or religion, you could go and enjoy quality
South African music, art and theatre. It was in this place that I became influenced by the music of Jonny Clegg and Juluka, Malombo and Mbongeni Ngema, the theatrical genius of Athol Fugard and John Kani and world famous plays like “Woza Albert” and “Boesman and Lena”. I have been living outside of South Africa for almost 30 years, but my dream of creating a venue that emulates the aims of ‘The Market’ has never left me.
The South Shore community is a diverse one, with many cultures, backgrounds and religions,
living in peace and harmony with each other. My idea was to create a venue where the music of each of these diverse cultures could be represented and heard by the community-at-large
to deepen our understanding of these different cultures within our community.
And so “Upstairs at the Sweet Spot” was born.
I am excited to bring to our community the music and musicians who are listed on the following pages for our enjoyment and musical pleasure. Each performer brings with him or her,
musical experiences that are both worldly yet down-to-earth. A win-win musical situation!
It is my hope that Upstairs at the Sweet Spot will become a beacon of cultural togetherness
in a world which seeks to divide rather than join. With your support we can achieve this.
